Bamboo Grove

Where Buddha taught

From Nalanda, we traveled to Rajagaya (Rajgir); the home of the bamboo grove and of Vulture Peak. The journey by bus took about  seven hours . We stopped en route twice. We sang on the bus, meditated and introduced ourselves to a person we hadn’t known. The countryside was beautiful. The irony that this was the sacred land of Buddha and also one of the poorest states in India where there is constant political unrest struck many of us. In the newspapers we had read that there was rioting at the Patna train station by the students. The caste society that Buddha tried so hard to change 2500 years ago is still existent in this area.
